Why we get joint pain

Joint pain is often blamed entirely on “wear and tear,” arthritis, or aging, but many times the real problem starts in the muscles surrounding the joint. When muscles become overused, injured, stressed, or held in poor posture for long periods of time, tiny micro-tears develop within the muscle fibers. As the body heals these areas, scar tissue forms. This scar tissue is the body’s normal repair response, but over time it can build up excessively and create tight, shortened, and restricted muscles.

As muscles tighten and lose flexibility from scar tissue buildup, they begin pulling unevenly on the joints they attach to. This creates abnormal joint mechanics and increased compression within the joint itself. Instead of the joint moving smoothly and evenly, the tight muscles create excessive pressure, altered movement patterns, and poor biomechanics. This added compression can irritate cartilage, pinch nerves, increase inflammation, and place excessive stress on tendons and ligaments surrounding the joint.

Many people focus only on the painful joint itself with rest, injections, medications, or anti-inflammatories, but if the surrounding muscles remain tight and dysfunctional, the abnormal compression and poor movement patterns continue. This is why joint pain often returns repeatedly even after temporary relief. Tight muscles around the neck, shoulders, hips, knees, or low back can continually stress the joints and limit proper movement, creating a cycle of chronic pain and stiffness.

Treatments such as Active Release Technique (ART), Graston Technique, and dry needling help address the actual soft tissue restrictions contributing to joint pain. ART helps break up scar tissue and restore proper muscle movement through precise tension and motion. Graston Technique uses specialized instruments to reduce adhesions and improve tissue mobility, while dry needling helps release tight muscle bands, improve circulation, and decrease muscular tension. By restoring normal muscle length, flexibility, and biomechanics, these treatments help reduce joint compression, improve movement, and relieve pain at its source.
