Testosterone Therapy for Women: Breaking Myths, Closing the Gap

For decades, testosterone has been labeled the “male hormone.” But what if we’ve been looking at it all wrong?

A recent publication from the European Society of Medicine argues that this misconception has left millions of women undiagnosed and undertreated for symptoms that are often dismissed as simply “getting older.”

At Contemporary Alternative Care, we believe women deserve to understand all of their hormone options. Here’s what the latest research has to say.

Myth #1: Testosterone Is Only Important for Men

Here’s something that surprises most people:

Women naturally produce testosterone, too.

In fact, throughout much of a woman’s life, testosterone is one of her most abundant biologically active sex hormones. It plays an important role in:

  • Energy production
  • Muscle strength and maintenance
  • Bone health
  • Mental clarity
  • Mood
  • Sexual health
  • Healthy aging

As testosterone levels decline with age, many women begin experiencing symptoms they mistakenly attribute to getting older.

Could Low Testosterone Be Affecting You?

Many women describe symptoms such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Loss of motivation
  • Difficulty building or maintaining muscle
  • Joint aches
  • Slower exercise recovery
  • Reduced libido
  • Mood changes
  • Loss of confidence

While these symptoms can have many causes, hormone imbalance is one possibility that deserves consideration.

Testosterone Does More Than Improve Libido

Although testosterone has traditionally been discussed primarily in relation to sexual health, emerging research suggests its effects extend much further.

According to the European Society of Medicine, testosterone supports:

  • 🦴 Bone Health
    • Healthy testosterone levels contribute to maintaining bone density and may help reduce age-related bone loss.
  • 💪 Lean Muscle Mass
    • Testosterone helps preserve muscle strength and physical function, making it easier to stay active as we age.
  • 🧠 Brain Function
    • Many women report improvements in focus, memory, and mental clarity when hormone deficiencies are appropriately addressed.
  • ❤️ Cardiovascular Health
    • Research continues to explore testosterone’s role in supporting vascular health and overall wellness.
  • 😊 Mood & Energy
    • Women treated with physiologic doses of testosterone often report improvements in energy, motivation, and overall quality of life.

What About Breast Cancer?

One of the biggest concerns surrounding testosterone therapy has been breast cancer.

According to the European Society of Medicine review, several observational studies have found no increase in breast cancer risk with appropriately dosed bioidentical testosterone therapy, and some studies have reported lower-than-expected rates of breast cancer among treated women. The review notes that this remains an active area of research and that more high-quality studies are needed to better understand these findings.

Will Testosterone Make Women Look Masculine?

This is probably the most common question we hear.

The answer is:

Not when it’s prescribed appropriately.

The goal is not to give women male testosterone levels.

Instead, treatment is individualized to restore testosterone to a healthy physiologic range for women. When carefully monitored, side effects are generally mild and may include acne or increased facial hair in some individuals.

Hormone Therapy Should Never Be One-Size-Fits-All

The Bottom Line

If you’ve been struggling with fatigue, brain fog, decreased strength, loss of motivation, or simply don’t feel like yourself anymore, it may be worth exploring whether your hormones are contributing.

A personalized evaluation can help determine whether testosterone optimization is appropriate for you.
