Common Conditions We Treat (and Why They Happen)
The menisci are two C-shaped wedges of fibrocartilage that sit between the thigh bone and shin bone in each knee. They act as shock absorbers, distribute load across the joint, and help stabilize the knee during movement. While significant meniscus tears often require surgical evaluation, many patients experience lower-grade meniscus irritation that causes persistent pain and discomfort without a true structural tear—and this type of irritation responds very well to conservative care.
Overload and Repetitive Stress
Activities that involve repeated loading of the knee—running, squatting, kneeling, or prolonged standing—can irritate the meniscus, particularly along its edges where nerve supply is more abundant. The inner and outer menisci (medial and lateral) are stressed differently depending on movement patterns and alignment, which is why symptoms can appear on one specific side of the knee.
Rotational Stress and Poor Mechanics
The menisci are particularly vulnerable to combined compression and rotation. Sports or activities that involve frequent twisting, pivoting, or changes of direction place high rotational stress on these structures. Over time—or in a single acute event—this can produce a range of responses from mild swelling and aching to a more significant structural injury.
Joint Line Tenderness and Swelling
The most recognizable symptom of meniscus irritation is tenderness directly along the joint line (the crease of the knee on the inner or outer side). Swelling, stiffness, and occasional “locking” or clicking sensations during movement are also common. Symptoms often worsen after prolonged activity and improve with rest—only to return once loading resumes.
Surrounding Muscle Weakness
When the muscles around the knee—especially the quadriceps and hamstrings—are weak or imbalanced, the meniscus absorbs a disproportionate share of the load the muscles should be managing. Addressing this muscular support system is an essential part of reducing stress on the meniscus during recovery.

Not every case of meniscus irritation requires surgery or imaging to treat effectively. Many patients with joint line pain, minor swelling, and activity-related stiffness find significant relief through soft tissue care, joint mobilization, and targeted rehabilitation that offloads the meniscus and rebuilds proper knee mechanics.
