What we can do for you!

Experience Modification Rates (EMR) play a crucial role in determining workers’ compensation insurance premiums for businesses. A lower EMR reflects a safer workplace and results in lower insurance costs, while a higher EMR can significantly increase expenses. One effective strategy for reducing workplace injuries, workers’ compensation claims, and OSHA recordables is the implementation of Active Release Technique (ART) as a proactive injury management solution.

Understanding

Experience Modification Rates (EMR)

  • EMR is a metric used by insurance providers to assess a company’s workers’ compensation claim history relative to industry standards
  • It is calculated based on three years of historical data, excluding the most recent year
  • An EMR of 1.0 is considered the industry average, while a rate below 1.0 indicates better-than-average safety performance
  • The lower the EMR, the lower the insurance rates. Higher EMRs equal higher insurance rates

How Workplace Injuries Affect EMR

Each workplace injury that results in a workers’ compensation claim contributes to a company’s EMR. Frequent or severe claims can cause the EMR to rise, leading to higher insurance costs for multiple years. Additionally, OSHA recordable incidents impact regulatory compliance and workplace reputation.

Case Study at the Tropicana Plant in Bradenton

Contemporary Alternative Care, based in Sarasota, Florida, has been at the forefront of providing ART-based workplace injury solutions. The company successfully implemented its ART program at the Tropicana plant in Bradenton, resulting in

30% reduction in workers’ compensation claims

25% decrease in OSHA recordables

Over $500,000 in savings on injury-related expenses in the first year

Over 5 million saved over 20 years

how it all comes together

Implementing ART to Reduce EMR and OSHA Recordables

Active Release Technique (ART) is a hands-on, movement-based treatment that targets soft tissue injuries, including repetitive strain injuries and musculoskeletal dysfunctions commonly found in industrial settings. ART focuses on restoring mobility, reducing pain, and improving function before injuries become severe enough to require costly medical intervention

Initial Assessment

When an employee reports discomfort or an injury, they will receive a full assessment. If the issue is musculoskeletal and does not require emergency medical care, the employee will receive on-site care by the ART provider.

ART as First Aid

The ART sessions are categorized as first aid expenses rather than a recordable medical treatment, keeping OSHA recordables and workers’ compensation claims minimal.

Recovery and Prevention

ART helps employees recover faster, reducing the need for physical therapy, time off work, and prolonged disability claims

Impact of ART on EMR and Workers’ Compensation Costs

By addressing injuries early through ART, companies can avoid costly medical claims and reduce lost workdays. Traditional physical therapy programs can cost between $1,350 and $11,200 per case, while ART provides an immediate and cost-effective alternative that keeps employees on the job. Since ART is classified as first aid treatment, it does not contribute to OSHA recordables or increase the EMR.

Conclusion

Incorporating Active Release Technique (ART) into workplace injury management strategies offers a proactive approach to reducing workers’ compensation claims and OSHA recordables. Contemporary Alternative Care has demonstrated measurable success in reducing injury costs and improving workplace safety. By having a structured process where facility nurses assess injuries and refer employees to ART providers, companies can minimize injury-related costs, maintain lower EMR rates, and improve workplace safety. This method not only benefits employees by promoting faster recovery but also helps businesses maintain a competitive edge through cost savings and a healthier workforce.
